Cooking Felt Boots
Posted on | January 28, 2011 | 4 Comments

I just wanted to cook them and then eat them. Planning for them started last week in my mind. Mental Notes taken and preparation was complete shortly after. I drew some designs on my sketch book and defined the elements i needed for these boots:

1- design ( Flat? heels? sport? fun?)
Surface design ( texture? simple?)
2-color ( some dying may be involved?)
3-thickness
4-height
5-foot size ( 6~7)
After the main questions were answered, it was time to do the wool measurements. How many grms of merino do I need? How many grams of a thicker breed do I need? After these were answered, it was time to cook my delicious felt boots :)
The Felting process was done in different steps, approximately 14 hrs of felting involved. Wooden blocks was used to shape the feet section:

Now they are sitting on the table, it will take one week for them to dry out. After that, second stage would be more detailed surface design. Third stage is installing an awesome pair of soles! good bless the cobbler, Amen!

My name is Hamideh Abol, I am a designer/ textile artist located in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Shefelt.ca is my blog where I write about my life, my inspirations, and my everyday challenges as a designer.
Term "Felt" in shefelt refers to a non-woven cloth that is produced by matting, condensing and pressing woolen fibres and that is the main medium for my designs.
I hope you enjoy my website.
